Ama in Ayurveda and ways of cleansing

Ama are Ayurvedic toxins that arise from poor nutrition and digestion. Spices, movement, and dietary lightening help prevent them, while Panchakarma supports the cleansing process.

Ama in Ayurveda and ways of cleansing

In Ayurvedic teaching, it is called Ama metabolic residues and toxins in the body. Ama is caused, among other things, by an unhealthy diet and inadequate digestion. It can build up in cells, joints or tissue and cause symptoms there.

Biochemical processes in the body normally ensure that waste materials are broken down and eliminated. Diseases occur when these mechanisms get out of balance.

In Ayurveda, there are various ways to prevent the development of Ama. An important approach is to strengthen digestion. Spices such as ginger, anise, fennel, caraway, coriander, cinnamon, cloves, and black pepper aid digestion and help prevent ama. Spices and herbs such as ginger, turmeric, basil, and fenugreek can also reduce Ama.

Movement activates body functions and also supports the elimination of Ama. Another method is conscious dietary relief, in which the body regularly receives phases of light, reduced food. This is adjusted differently depending on the constitution: more mild and stabilizing for Vata, balancing and cooling for Pitta and more reduced and clearly structured for Kapha. In addition, it is recommended to take a relief day with soups, fruits and liquid once a month. Warm water throughout the day can also help the body get rid of the body.

The Ayurvedic area that deals with cleansing and detoxification is called Panchakarma. Water-soluble substances are excreted via the kidneys, while fat-soluble residues can be deposited more easily in the tissue. In addition to classic cleansing procedures such as gentle laxatives or enemas, a Panchakarma treatment also includes soothing oil massages and oil infusions.

Detoxification and cleansing are seen as an important basis for health in Ayurveda and can be a central part of a Panchakarma cure and Ayurvedic treatment.
